Lee Merritt is a civil rights attorney known for representing victims and families impacted by police violence and racialized violence. But his journey to becoming an advocate for justice was anything but conventional. After being expelled from school, placed in a Marine Institute, and told he was an “at-risk” youth with a 0.333 GPA, Lee went to Morehouse College, law school, and began a career challenging systems of injustice.
In this episode of Less Than One Percent, Lee shares the experiences that shaped him, the stereotypes and boxes he has had to push against, and why he refuses to let fear stop him. The conversation also explores the mission behind policing, the impact of police violence on young Black men, mental health, and mentorship.
This is how Lee Merritt disrupted the boxes people placed around him—and turned being counted out into a reason to keep pushing forward.
